1st 3D Background

Hey All!
Here is my first attempt building a 3D background for Spectre my Jungle Carpet Python.

Materials I used:
   - Polystyrene
   - Liquid Nails ($5)
   - Non-Sanded Grout ($10)
   - Acrylic Paint ($5)
   - Spray Bottle ($2)
   - ModPodge Matte Sealant ($15)
   - X-acto Knife (Boxcutter) ($5)
   - Soldering Iron
   - Face Mask with Filters (Melting Polystyrene = very Toxic)

I threw this together in my garage (nice and ventilated) and it probably took about 20h from start to finish. I collected polystyrene wherever I could find it (mainly from the local Green Grocer). The rest of the supplies were easy to find at local hardware stores. It's a lot of fun to do, despite the amount of work.

The next Adventure in Enclosure Construction is going to be Spectre's full sized enclosure!

1st Step: Constructing of base by glueing
sculpted Polystyrene blocks to sheet of Polystyrene.
Step 2: Apply thin coat of grout to ensure all
crevices are covered.

Step 3: Apply gradually thicker coats
of Grout to increase Structure's Strength.

Step 4a: Use acrylic paint to apply
many layers of colour. I used a spray bottle with

watered down acrylic paint to apply many
layers/shades to increase realistic look.

Step 4b: Coat brush in light paint and wipe most of it off.
This allows you to apply thin coats of paint to protrusions in
rocks. This highlights where the rocks stick out, while
emphasising the natural depressions.

Step 5: Coat the entire background (including bottom and back) in Sealant.
This will Waterproof your background and allow for sanitisation.

Step 6: Install the Background in enclosure.

Step 7: Let your Scaly Friend explore every nook and cranny.

Step 8: Sit back and enjoy watching your reptiles
in their new, naturalistic environment.
